Introduction
The purpose of this article is to promote the use of street legal gas and electric motor scooters or mopeds in the USA.
Scooters are a significant form of transportation in many other parts of the world. Just look at Taiwan (Population 23 million) almost half its population (11 million) own motor scooters. In the US we still think that big cars, trucks and SUV’s are to be used by each member of a family for small errands and short trips to school, market or train station. Even though scooters are more efficient and convenient than cars, SUV’s, trucks and motorcycles, Americans have not fully recognized the advantages of scooters although we are starting to come around. To prove the point, Figures released by the Motorcycle Industry Council clearly indicate that progress is being made. Annual motor scooters sales have grown every year since 1999, when only 25,000 were sold. By 2004, sales had reached 86,000 and today they are estimated to be well over 125,000 annually.
Why Scoot?
I’m sure at one time or another you have asked yourself whether you should own a Scooter or Moped. I know that I have. Here are some reasons to scoot:
Recreation
You have watched people riding these vehicles seemingly enjoying the experience. So, you think, why not you too. This is recreational thinking, meaning your interest is probably only in recreational scooting because of what you have seen. Yes, scooting can be a great social outlet where you can meet people while you scoot in groups. This is fun.
Economics.
Then, there are those for whom the scooter or moped is almost a necessity. If that’s you, you probably and you have to travel to work or town and can’t afford to use your auto, SUV or truck for travel to these places like you used to due to astronomical gasoline prices.
When you consider a scooter or moped you should look at such factors as:
The cost of the scooter or moped.
Cost to operate your current vehicle.

Jonathan S. Shafer
Born in the Chicago area and raised in Lake Forest, Illinois. Mr. Shafer received an appointment to the first class of the United States Air Force Academy from Congresswoman Margaret Stitt Church.
After graduation from the Academy, Lt. Shafer, already a Navigator, earned his pilot?s wings and became an instructor pilot.
In 1965 Mr. Shafer left the Air Force to begin his career in business and industry. Because of his communication, training and leadership skills, he rose rapidly to Vice President of Sales for a national company.
After almost twenty years, he started his own Full Service Advertising Agency with his two sons. Using his leadership and communication skills, he and his sons successfully grew their company to a multimillion-dollar corporation.
